Free tools: privacy and terms
Version 2026-11-01, last updated 1 November 2026
This page is for people who use the free tools on The Maktab App: the travel cost calculator, Hifz Tracker, Hijri calendar, Qibla compass and Muraja'ah.
It is short on purpose. The tools keep your data on your own device unless you choose otherwise. Nothing here is for sale, and nothing is used for adverts.
If you use The Maktab App as a school, the privacy notice covers that instead.
Who we are
The free tools are run by Centorise Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, number 17368406. We trade as The Maktab App.
For the free tools, we decide how your data is used. That makes us the controller under UK data protection law.
You can reach us at contact@themaktabapp.com or through our contact page.
Where the tools keep your data
You choose. Most tools keep everything on the device you are using, and send nothing to us.
- On your device. This is the default. Your entries stay in your browser. Clearing your browser data removes them.
- A spreadsheet. Muraja'ah can download your plan as a spreadsheet and read one back in. This happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to us.
- Your own Google Drive. The Hifz Tracker can keep a copy in a file in your own Google Drive. We do not store it. Muraja'ah no longer offers Google Drive, though anyone already connected keeps it until they move.
- A Maktab account. This is optional. Muraja'ah can keep a copy with us so you can use it on more than one device. The next sections explain this.
- The Qibla compass. It uses your location only after your browser asks and you agree. It saves a place rounded to about 100 metres on your device. It does not send it to us.
The Maktab account
The account is optional, and anyone aged 13 or over can create one.
You sign in with Google or with a one-time code sent to your email. There are no passwords. Sign-in codes last 10 minutes. A sign-in lasts up to 90 days on a device.
The account is free. We do not take payment for it.
What we hold when you have an account
We hold only what the account needs:
- Your email address.
- Your Google account number, if you sign in with Google. We do not get your Google password.
- Your plan type.
- A record of what you agreed to: the version of this page and the times you agreed.
- What the tool saved. That is one document per tool, up to 512 KB each.
What you can save is up to you
Muraja'ah is a Qur'an revision planner. What you save in it can show your religious belief. UK law treats that as special category data, so we ask for your clear agreement first.
Please do not save anything you would not want us to hold. We do not need names of children or other people.
Why we are allowed to hold it
For the account itself, the reason is contract. You asked for an account, so we need your email and sign-in details to run it.
For your saved revision data, the reason is your explicit consent. This is UK GDPR Article 9(2)(a). You give it with a separate tick box when you create the account.
You can withdraw that consent at any time by deleting your account. That deletes the saved data too.
Age: 13 or over
You must be 13 or over to create a Maktab account. That is the UK age of digital consent (Data Protection Act 2018, section 9).
If you are under 13, please do not create an account. You can keep using the tools on your device. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 13, we delete it.
What you agree to when you create an account
There are three tick boxes. You must tick all three to continue.
- I am 13 or over.
- I agree to the free tools terms and privacy notice, which is this page.
- I agree that you keep my saved revision data, which may show my religious belief. This is a separate, explicit consent.
How long we keep it
We keep your account until you delete it.
Accounts not used for 12 months are deleted automatically. That includes the saved data.
Our database provider may keep a short restore history, up to 7 days, so deleted data can take that long to disappear completely.
How to delete your account
Open the account sheet in the tool and press the delete button. It removes your account and everything saved in it.
If you cannot get in, email contact@themaktabapp.com from the address on the account and we will delete it.
How we keep it safe
The account data sits in its own walled-off part of our database. It is separate from school records. The tool code cannot read school records.
The database is in London. The connection is encrypted. There are no passwords to leak. Sign-in codes are scrambled before we store them.
No system is perfectly safe. If something goes wrong with your data, we will tell you and the regulator where the law says we must.
Who else handles your data
These companies help us run the account:
- Neon keeps the database, in London.
- Cloudflare runs the website.
- Google handles sign in with Google.
- Resend sends the sign-in code email.
- Stripe takes optional support payments, if you make one.
Optional support payments
A tool may offer a "Help keep it free" link. It is optional. Paying unlocks nothing. Every tool works the same for everyone.
Payments are handled by Stripe. Stripe receives your payment details, not us. We receive Stripe's record of the payment.
After you pay, the tool remembers on your device, or in your account, that you came back. That is only so it stops asking.
Our privacy notice and the sub-processors page list the other companies we use.
We do not use your data for adverts
No adverts, no tracking across other sites, and no selling or sharing your data. We do not build a profile of you.
Your rights
You can ask to see your data, to correct it, to delete it, to limit or object to how it is used, and to take a copy with you. You can withdraw consent at any time.
For most of this you do not need to ask us. You can see what is saved in the tool, change it, and delete your account yourself.
To ask us anything, email contact@themaktabapp.com or use our contact page. We reply within one month. It costs nothing.
If you are unhappy
Tell us first if you can. Our complaints procedure explains what happens next.
You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk. You can go to them at any time.
We have also published our data protection impact assessment.
Terms of use
These terms apply to the free tools and the Maktab account.
- Free. The tools and the account are free. We do not charge for them.
- Best effort. We try to keep the tools working and your data safe. We cannot promise they will always be available or free of mistakes. Keep your own copy of anything important. Muraja'ah can download a spreadsheet.
- Fair use. Each tool can save one document of up to 512 KB. Please stay within that, and do not try to overload, attack or misuse the service.
- Closing accounts. We may close an account that misuses the service. We may also change or stop a tool. If we can, we will give you time to take your data out first.
- Not advice. The tools are aids. Check prayer times, directions and other important details with a trusted source.
- No warranty beyond the law. We give no promises beyond those the law requires. Nothing here limits any right you have by law that cannot be limited. Nothing here limits our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
- English law. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales can decide any dispute, unless the law where you live gives you the right to use your own courts.
Changes to this page
If this page changes in a way that matters, we change the version number at the top and ask you to agree again before you carry on with an account.
The version you agreed to is stored with your account.
